KRA has been holding numerous import containers, among them 26 containers that were imported on various dates between 2016 and 2018 and whose interception was occasioned by evidence of tax evasion perpetrated through concealment of the true identity of the goods imported.
Records indicate that the container contents were primarily declared as machinery and equipment which attracts zero tax rate, while in reality the cargo comprised of assorted commercial items including electronics, motor vehicle spares, cosmetics, garments and edible oil.
It has come to KRA’s attention that though the cargo was imported under the name(s) of cargo consolidators, in reality the merchandise therein belonged to individual persons whose business activities have been adversely impacted by the cargo held up.
In order to resolve the stalemate, various actions have been agreed among which is the commencement of the release of the cargo in question to its rightful owners. KRA therefore calls upon the bonafide owners to avail themselves to clear and take possession of their cargo, subject to production of genuine documentation of ownership.
As a first step, persons who may have goods in the containers detailed below are invited to avail themselves at the respective cargo locations with effect from Tuesday 4th June 2019. Despite the decision to release the goods however, it is hereby clarified that persons who committed offences of mis-declaration as the importers on record, will remain accountable for their criminal acts in accordance with the law.
