Suspect charged with possession of 30 litres ethanol in house

A suspect has been charged with being in possession of 30 litres of ethanol before Nakuru law court. The suspect, John Kinyua Wachira, faced a charge of being in possession of restricted goods contrary to section 200(d) (ii) as read with section 210 (c) of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004.

Kinyua was arrested on 18th May, 2022 by KRA officers with the help of Police officers from Bondeni Police Station at his house at Flamingo Estate in Nakuru East after he was found with five jerricans of 30 litres of ethanol. He pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Hon. Bildad Ochieng and was granted a bail of KShs. 100,000 due to the gravity of the offence. The case shall be mentioned on 7th June 2022.

If convicted, the suspect shall be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to a fine equal to fifty percent of the dutiable value of the goods involved or both as provided for by the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004 section 200(d). KRA cautions traders against such transgressions warning them that the elaborate systems in place will eventually exclude them from compliant taxpayers.
