KRA intercepts contraband goods in Homabay County

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in partnership with other government enforcement agencies have seized illicit liquor worth approximately one million in Mfangano Island, Homabay County.

The illicit goods were seized from a trader who is believed to own several warehouses in the Island for flouting various regulations that govern importation and sale of such products in the country.

The intercepted consignment comprised of illicit liquor branded Simba Waragi, packed in 205 ML (6288) plastic bottles, 1649 packets of Super Match cigarettes, ten (10) kilograms of Canabis Sativa (bhang), three (3) bales of polythene bags among other goods. The consignment is being held at Mbita Customs Office.

The suspect escaped after a confrontation between the officers and locals ensued during the operation. He is still at large.

In a separate incident, Customs Officers based at the Isebania One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) intercepted nine (9) Kgs of Cannabis Sativa (bhang) with an approximate value of Kshs.92,000.

The officers were on a routine patrol when the suspect who was ferrying the consignment on a motorcycle spotted them and decided to abandon the bhang and flee. Investigations are ongoing in pursuit of the suspect.

KRA remains committed in securing the country’s border points and eliminating illicit trade. Illicit trade not only deny the government a fair share of revenue but also pose unfair business competition to legitimate businesses.

KRA is part of the multi-agency team in operation against illicit trade and contraband goods.
