CUSTOMS SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to notify all importers of second-hand vehicles into Kenya of the review of the requirement of authentication of Certificates of Export or Log Books by Embassies, High Commissions or Consulates in cases where the Certificates of Export and/or Log Books are in a language other than English. Authentication will only be required in specific cases where there is doubt on the authenticity or otherwise of the Motor Vehicles documents.
This review has been done following consultation with stakeholders and the need to facilitate smooth clearance of motor vehicles that have been legally imported into the country. All Certificates of Clearance that have been retained due to implementation of this requirement will be released for registration of the subject motor vehicles UNLESS there is doubt on the authenticity of original motor vehicle documents.
It should be noted:
- THAT it is mandatory for importers to submit original certificates from organizations contracted to perform pre-shipment verification of conformity to KS 1515:2000 by Kenya Bureau of Standards during the clearance process.
- THAT only authentic Original Certificates of Export and/or Log Books from the Country of Origin/ Exportation will be accepted for the purpose of making a customs declaration.
- THAT only the Original commercial invoice and Original Bill of Lading from the Country of Origin/ Exportation will be accepted for the purpose of making a customs declaration.
