KRA Introduces New Number Plates

Kenya Revenue Authority will from next month introduce a new series of number plates in a bid to crackdown on unscrupulous motor vehicle dealers, Registrar of Motor Vehicles Simeon Ole Kirgotty had said.

The Registrar said the move was necessary after the Authority discovered that importers of vehicles were using number plates initially meant for motor cycles, tractors and other heavy machinery to attract clients.

Registration numbers will be as follows for motorcycles: KMCA 001A, three wheelers; KTWA 001A, heavy machinery; KHMA 001A and tractors KTCA 001A respectively.

The new series of number plates will prevent fraud as the public tend to buy number plates from motor vehicle dealers without the knowledge that they are meant for certain motor vehicles i.e. motorcycles.

Number plates previously issued will be recalled so as to create uniformity.

The Registrar said that the Authority will issue a public notice to create awareness on which number plates had been allocated to various vehicles and affected individuals will be allowed to change their numbers free of charge.
