KRA COMMISSIONS SCANNER AT MOI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT-MOMBASA

Kenya Revenue Authority on 26th January 2009 commissioned an X-ray scanner at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa.

The scanner was installed in line with the Authority’s reform and modernisation agenda.

Assistant Minister for Finance Hon. Dr. Oburu Odinga commissioned the scanner and praised the authority for its efforts to boost efficiency in cargo verification.

Speaking during the ceremony, KRA Board Chairman Mr. Leonard Mwangola said there has been increased global concern about the security of cargo and the protection of society, the movement of weapons and materials, which could pose serious security challenges to individual countries and the global village.

He said this has led to use of technology in the form of cargo scanners which have become working tools in modern customs administrations world wide.

The Commissioner General Mr. M.G. Waweru said the recent acquisition of patrol boats for Mombasa and Kisumu waterways combined with other modern and non-intrusive enforcement tools such as the X-ray scanners would provide effective solutions to counter threats to national security.

He added that the application of risk management processes using data generated from scanners would greatly reinforce targeting, profiling and verification of cargo processes.

To date KRA has installed a total of eight scanners; two at the Mombasa port, one at Jommo Kenyatta International Airport, Eldoret International Airport, Moi International Airport, while two others have been deployed  in Mombasa (Container Freight Service)s and Inland Container Depot, Embakassi.
