KRA Launches Online Registration & Filing Services

 


Kenya Revenue Authority on 29th January 2009 officially launched electronic registration and filing of return (VAT 3) in a function presided over by the Commissioner General Mr. M G. Waweru at Times Tower, Convention Centre, Nairobi.

Since piloting of the electronic registration which began on 5th December 2008 a total of 133 taxpayers have been registered, while filing of returns whose piloting commenced on 18th December 2008 with selected taxpayers in Nairobi witnessed successful beginning. Mr. Waweru said these achievements gave him the motivation to open electronic registration and filing of VAT monthly returns to the wider taxpaying public.

He said from 1st February 2009 online services will extend to Withholding VAT popularly known as VAT 32. He also announced that from 1st of March this year the authority will roll out online filing of PAYE and Excise Duty returns.

The Commissioner General said the objectives of the broad online services the authority has rolled out as part of the Revenue Administration Reform and Modernisation Programme are aimed at improving the efficiency of tax collection process, provide quality service to taxpayers by enhancing speed of service delivery and accuracy of transactions, minimise and ultimately eradicate corruption by significantly reducing contact between staff and taxpayers. Others include enhancing compliance and facilitating combined enforcement action through seamless sharing of information across KRA and between the Authority and across parties, reducing the cost of tax collection and compliance and provide a single view of the taxpayer.

KRA introduced online services in the year 2005 with the commencement of online lodgement of customs entries, followed by online application for IDF and lodgement of manifests. In November 2007, the authority commenced development of systems that were aimed at facilitating on line services including registration by taxpayers, tax returns, payment of taxes lodgement of enquiries.

Mr. Waweru said that going by experience with the products so far developed he was confident that the authority will realise its objectives and operate efficiently. He urged taxpayers to embrace the technology based initiatives in tandem with KRA to benefit even more.
